And So It Begins

Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay

So Nepal is this beautiful country nestled inbetween China and India. It is known for its cold temperatures and tall mountains. Before the 1950's we didn't hear much about Nepal, but that changed when Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay were the first to summit Mount Everest in 1953.

Nepal was once a secluded area that focused on religion and family. They had nothing of which to compare their world. Then, the world, quite literally, came knocking at their door. Hiking Mount Everest became a very appealing, popular idea and brought people from all over the world who in turn brought new ideas and styles.

For example, the Sherpa’s did not used to have watches. They didn’t know how to tell time. They understood time as the sun rising and the sun setting. Trekkers brought watches and the western idea of being “on time.” Now that aspect of their culture, of just living the day while the sun is shining is gone. They have time and schedule and time limits. If something as small as a watch can change a culture dramatically, just imagine what all the other changes brought to their culture.

hey friends if you could take this quick survey, that would be so helpful! Thanks

  2. I have read your blog, and I think your topic really appeals to me. Nepal is a country close to China. Many of my friends have been there for a visit before.

I think your topic interrelates to my topic in some way. Though I highlight the pricing in China, this dilemma is the same in China. Poor regions with great history or nature scenic want to develop tourism in order to fasten their economy. However, the more they connect to outer world, the more they change. They became eager for the profits, and no longer as pure as before. So I think we both want to find methods to develop tourism without hurting local environment, and culture.

I believe the UNESCO will help you a lot with your topic. Here is the link to Nepal page. http://whc.unesco.org/en/statesparties/np#news You can easily find resource about Nepal heritage, and the events to preserve this place.

In terms of calling for further awareness, I think we should work together to promote the importance of preserving this place on Line. It is the most effective methods for us to make this concept better known to others. Also, I can contract my friends in China, for more information.

Hope my post makes sense for you.

  3. I love that you are bringing awareness to this issue. I, of course, have heard of many people climbing Mount Everest but have heard very little about Nepal itself. I never would have known what was occurring there. I suppose it is true in many areas of the world but we are never told the negative effects that are happening. All we ever hear is how incredible it was that someone managed to climb Mount Everest or how beautiful the mountain is.

I'm very interested to hear more about your topic seeing as I believe it relates to my blog a decent amount. I also feel that it is important to keep the cultures separate. Travel is amazing and a wonderful thing that has been made easier for us through time but it has also come with consequences. I think we can overcome some of the consequences if we make conscience decisions about the way we travel. I like the conscious effort you are making to keep culture alive and hopefully we can all learn from this. I am likewise trying to make travelers aware of what they can do when they travel to help keep the culture alive. I think we could both do this better by eventually giving people specific ideas about what they should do when they get to a new country or city - how to behave, where to shop, and how to interact with locals. I hope we can make a difference!

  4. I also plan to talk about some acculturation issues but in the Caribbean. I think the influence on a once secluded culture can indeed have both positive and negative affects. While I don't have a specific website for you, I have gotten some good ideas and learned quite a bit by simply browsing through search results of "acculturation." There might be something there specifically pertaining to your topic of the people of Nepal. Good luck!

  5. Nepal certainly is one extremely interesting, however, very cold corner of the world. My blog onecoldtourist.weebly.com, being about Alberta Canada, also is concerned with an environmentally alpine area with breathtaking views. However, concerning its native population... tourism is a big part of its economy which brings with it both items that are positive and negative.
We might be able to help each other with research on our topics like in finding articles that are about community improvements or challenges. Or, even films that have to do with our designated areas.
